The San Saba community is mourning the sudden and unexpected loss of Police Chief Steven B. Newkirk, who passed away early this morning at 3:47 a.m., according to an official statement released by the San Saba Police Department.

Chief Newkirk, known for his unwavering dedication, warmth, and visionary leadership, joined the department in 2021 and quickly rose through the ranks. He was promoted to Detective shortly after his arrival, where he brought a renewed spirit of positivity and growth to the force. In 2024, following the departure of former Chief Bauer, Newkirk was appointed Chief of Police.

“Steve was more than just a colleague—he was a true friend and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the department said in a heartfelt tribute. “His absence leaves a profound void, but his impact and legacy will remain.”

Under Chief Newkirk’s guidance, the department thrived, maintaining a standard of unity and strength that touched not only his fellow officers but also the broader San Saba community.

Details surrounding the cause of his passing have not been released at this time.

The department concluded its message with a poignant farewell:
“Rest in God’s heavenly embrace, Brother—we’ve got it from here. #211 10-42” — a final radio call signifying that an officer has gone off duty for the last time.

Community members, fellow law enforcement officers, and city leaders are expected to come together in the coming days to honor Chief Newkirk’s life and service.
