JCISD hires Brent Kornegay as new athletic director, head football coach

JCISD Trustees met for a Regular Board Meeting oat 6 p.m. Monday, March 10. Middle School student Emma Walston gave the Invocation, and there were no public comments.

Recognitions & Presentations

Coach Chris Schlicke recognized the following Lady Eagle Basketball High School students: Brooke Hobbs TABC All Region Team, 1st Team All District, Academic All District Jackie Earley-Co-Defensive MVP and Academic All District

Chloe Clark-1st Team All District and Academic All District Ashley Barrera-2nd Team All District and Academic All District Maddy Hacker-Honorable Mention and Academic All District Stevie Rogers-Academic All District Riley Birck-Academic All District

Jaycee Debusk-Academic All District Kylie Allen-Academic All District Katie Hacker-Academic All District Coach Kaznie Clark recognized the District Champion Middle School 8th grade Girls Basketball team. Team members were: Kaylie Clark, Trinity Pennell, Lilianna Hernandez, Zoey Aguirre, Taryn Fry, Ollie Doyle, Hannah Mains, Kiera Roeder, Isla McCoy, and Emrie Fulton.

Elementary Principal Amanda Haley recognized 4th grade students who were nominated by their teachers.

“Riley McAngus is a spectacular example of what it means to be a fourth grader at LBJE. She strives to do her best on her classroom assignments and will go out of her way to make a great assignment even better. She is very conscientious about correcting her classwork and is not afraid to ask for help or advice. She is a compassionate friend and a “one of a kind girl.”

“Laurel Reed represents fourth grade at LBJE with a bright smile and positive attitude every single day. Laurel is 100% invested in her own education and is enthusiastic about learning new skills and seeks out additional information to broaden her own personal connections to the things going on in class. With these qualities, I believe Laurel is destined for greatness and it is a true pleasure to work with her this year.”

Anish Pradhan and Rich Gatehouse of Gallagher Construction Management provided the Trustees with a Bond Project Update.

JCISD Superintendent Ben Eubanks shared the Superintendent Report. Total enrollment is 706, which includes 313 Elementary School students, 140 Middle School students, and 253 High School students.

JCISD Board members will attend the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) Conference in San Antonio June 11-13.

Trustees reviewed the monthly bills list and Consent Agenda which included minutes of previous meetings, Financial Statements, and payment of Construction Invoices. Trustees Cynthia Keene and Calen Mc-Nett motioned for approval of the Consent Agenda and the motion passed 7-0.

Also approved was the 2025-2026 Budget Calendar following motion from Trustees Clayton Young and Jayme Roschetzky; motion passed 7-0. No Budget Amendments were presented for approval.

Trustees discussed and approved Certification of Unopposed Candidates for the School Board Election following motion from McNett and Roschetzky.

As all candidates are running unopposed, the 2025 School Board Election scheduled for May 3, 2025 was approved for cancellation following motion from Trustees Joe Walker and Brit Odiorne.

The purchase of equipment for the new weight rooms was discussed and approved following motion from Keene and Walker, motion passed unanimously.

Trustees entered into Closed Session at 6:23 pm and resumed Open Session at 7:12 pm. When Open Session resumed Michael Norton was named Chief Financial Officer (CFO) beginning July 1, 2025. Trustees Young and McNett motioned for approval; motion carried 5-2.

Brent Kornegay was named Athletic Director/Head Football Coach beginning March 24, 2025, and motion for approval was given by McNett and Keene and passed unanimously.

Multi Year contracts were approved for a one-year extension to Russell Maegden, Amanda Haley, Penny Pulatie, and Shannon Helmke following motion from Keene and Young which passed 7-0.

Eubanks shared the Board Calendar as follows: March 14, 2025-Student Holiday/Teacher Workday March 17, 2025-March 21, 2025-Spring Break April 7, 2025-Student Holiday/Teacher Workday April 14, 2025-Regular School Board Meeting The meeting adjourned at 7:16 pm following motion from Keene and Roschetzky.
