Johnson City boys, girls take third at home track meet

Johnson City boys, girls take third at home track meet
Ema Davis placed third in girls shot put with a distance of 29-6.

Johnson City’s track and field teams competed at home on March 12. The varsity girls and boys teams each placed third in the home meet.

“Sometimes, someone will get a little too comfortable and don’t always perform the best at home,” said Andrew Corpus, boys track and field coach. “We like being on the road a little bit because we usually get a little bit more pumped up for that kind of stuff.”

Standouts in the boys events include Max Lechow’s first place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.85 and Walker Jackson’s win in the long jump with a distance of 210.5. For the girls events, Jackie Early won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:25.91 and the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:34.24. Kallyn Kleinert won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50.39.

Johnson City competes on March 27 in Blanco in the final meet before the district meet in Junction, which is on April 3. With how the season has shaken out so far, there is optimism in the team that one or more athletes will represent Johnson City beyond the district meet.

“So far right now, we’re looking good,” Corpus said. “We should have quite a few people probably getting out to regionals and maybe given a chance at getting a few people into state this year.”

The Johnson City junior varsity boys team won its meet with 201 points, three more than second place Blanco. The girls JV team finished fourth.

Standout performances included Jaxon McKennis’s first place showing in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.25 and Oswaldo Flores’s win in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:09.00. Standouts for the JV girls included Kylie Allen’s win the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:08.15 and Addison Colas’ win in the discus event with a distance of 92-7. Full Johnson City top performers:
