Challenging Tournaments Continue to Prepare Llano Golfers

Two weeks remain before the District 5-3A golf championships, and the Llano High School athletes are doing all they can to take advantage of the final days 'All of my golfers are continuing to work hard,' head coach Mike McIntosh said. 'They are splitting their time between track and live stock judging. It's a credit to these kids on how hard they're willing to work.'

Junior Jordan Hussion had her best finish, placing second at the Jim Ned Invitational at Shady Oaks Country Club in Baird March 17. She shot a new personal best of 81.

'She stayed positive the whole day,' McIntosh said. 'It was her best putting day of the year. Jordan is still trending upward. She hits the ball well. She still realizes she needs to work on her short game. She turned in another solid performance.'

That came on the heels of scoring an 88 at the Wimberley Invitational February 25, placing ninth out of 65 golfers.

The two have been working on her short game. The coach believes once the junior is more consistent in that area, she will be very difficult to beat.

Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets were fifth at the Comfort Invitational, site of the first round of the district tournament. The March 3 event drew 22 teams.

Luke Davis paced the Jackets by shooting an even par of 71 to finish third.

That result came after Llano placed ninth at 'the highly competitive' Dinosaur Classic in Glen Rose February 28-March 1. As a team, the Jackets scored a 316 in the first round and a 309 in the second round for a total of 625.

Graham Prokop shot a three-under par 69 in the second round. Other golfers included Stephen Barrack, Heith Rhea and Davis.

'This is the second year we've been to Glen Rose,' McIntosh said. 'They play teams we just don't see anywhere else – teams from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, (Class) 4A teams, including the defending state champion (Bridgeport). We played with different teams for two days. Those kids play golf year around. They got a look at what it takes to play at a high level. I think the kids who play only golf are missing out. We're still playing well against teams that this is all they do.'

The first round of the district tournament is March 25 in Comfort, and the second round is at the Llano River Golf Course March 26.
