The throwers highlighted the first meet for the Llano High School track and field program.
At the Ingram meet, which was moved to February 18 to avoid the bad weather, throwers Peyton Parrish and Cole Kennedy returned with medals and new personal records.
Parrish won the girls varsity discus by setting three personal records on three consecutive throws. She finished fourth in the shot put.
'What a day,' head coach Ryan Priem said. 'Her shot put was very good as well. Peyton has really bought into the weight room this year and her confidence from volleyball season and the end of basketball season has started her on a great path leading into track. We are going to need her to score some big points at the district meet.'
Kennedy took silver in the discus and bronze in the shot put.
'I thought for Cole's first-ever varsity meet, he threw great,' Priem said. 'We might have had one kid throw the shot over 40 feet since Ray Dixon graduated (in 2018). And I thought his discus throw was equally impressive.'
Parrish's efforts resulted in her being named the girls varsity Thrower of the Week, while relay runners Enola Matlock and Hailey Lucas were named the co-Runners of the Week.
'Both girls had to step in as alternates just so we could compete as a team,' Priem said. 'They did a great job. They both put the team before themselves.'
Kennedy was named the boys varsity Thrower of the Week, while Townes Smith took the honor of Runner of the Week thanks to competing in the mile and two-mile races.
The meet drew teams from Bandera, Blanco, Comfort, Kerrville Tivy, Mason and San Antonio Cole competing in four different divisions.
' The field was very strong,' Priem said.
Around 70 Llano athletes competed.
'Which is pretty good considering we only have one senior boy, RJ Coplin, and one senior girl, Ciara Hays, competing in track this season,' the coach said. 'We weren't at full strength for a few different reasons, but we expect to be closer to full strength when we travel to Comfort.'
That meet is Thursday, February 27.
Priem noted that some athletes are competing in other sports, while others were finishing commitments to the hardwood.
'I was very pleased with the some of the results from the meet, especially from the basketball players, who only had about two-and-a-half days of track practice before the meet,' he said. 'Track is hard. There's nowhere to hide. You are out there on the track with a maximum of seven other competitors at once. All eyes are on you to perform and perform well. Track is just as much mental as it is physical. You have to be mentally tough to step on in any condition, know that possibly you aren't the best and still try to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I think the mental toughness carries over to the other sports.'
Girls junior varsity Thrower of the Week is Brissa Tristan, while the Runner of the Week is Sophia Passmore.
Boys junior varsity Thrower of the Week is Mario Hernandez, while the Runner of the Week is Christian Cortez.
'We are pleased and encouraged by some of the results,' the coach said. 'The relays were the biggest area of improvement that we are going to focus on leading into the Comfort meet. We are getting a few kids back. That alone will help. And our kids are motivated.'
Llano is hosting its annual Jacket Relays Thursday, March 6, with the field events beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the running events to start at 4:45 p.m.
