Johnson City’s sales tax revenue in 2024 increased 5.2 percent over its total from 2023.
The city took in $767,732.58 in sales tax revenue this year, up from $729,759.73 in sales tax revenue in 2023, according to figures released by the State Comptroller’s office last week.
Since 2021, Johnson City’s sales tax revenue increased $186,593.98. The city took in $581,138.61 in sales tax revenue in 2021. That total increased to $669,978.71 in 2022, went up to $729,549.73 in 2023, and increased to $767,732.58 in 2024.
The city’s December sales tax revenue increased 31.79 percent from 2023 to 2024. The city took in $66,693.67 in sales tax revenue this month, up from $50,603.49 during December 2023.
Round Mountain’s sales tax revenue decreased by $68,664.64 from 2021 to 2024. It took in $ 104,919.20 in sales tax revenue in 2021. That total decreased to $78,365.77 in 2022, fell to $52,417.50 in 2023, and dropped to $36,254.56 in 2024.
At least part of the yearly decrease in sales tax revenue for Round Mountain is due to repayment of previous overpayments the town previously received, Round Mountain’s mayor said earlier this year.
“We had some issues for a while with too much sales tax and we’re having to pay that back because they overpaid us,” said Round Mountain Mayor Julian Gutierrez on July 16. “It’s something that our town attorney, Will Moursund, has been keeping track of. I think that the current numbers are where they should have been a long time ago.”
Round Mountain’s December 2024 sales tax revenue decreased 30.83 percent over totals received in December 2023. The city took in $2,357.87 in sales tax revenue this month, down from $3,551.61 in sales tax revenue in December 2023.
Blanco’s annual sales tax revenue for 2024 was $1,134,342.06, an increase of $112,411.35 over the $1,021,930.71 that the city collected in 2023. That’s an increase of 10.99 percent The city’s sales tax intake has increased more than $270,000 from 2021 to 2024. Blanco’s sales tax revenue increased each year during the time period, from $857,290.58 in 2021 to $965,565.51 in 2022, and from $1,021,930.71 in 2023 to $1,134,342.06 in 2024.
Blanco’s sales tax revenue increased 52.43 percent in December 2024 from the same month a year ago. The city took in $119,903.55 in December 2024, up from $78,660.38 in December 2023.
The state collected $1.2 billion in December sales tax allocations to return to cities, transit systems, counties and special purpose districts. These numbers are based on sales made in October by businesses which report monthly. After businesses send sales tax revenue to the comptroller’s office, they are distributed to entities the first week of the next month.
The state sales tax rate is 6.25 percent. A local sales tax of up to 2 percent may be added to that number. Blanco and Johnson City each have a 1.5 percent local sales tax rate, while it is 1 percent for Round Mountain.
Sales tax revenue was up 6.8 percent statewide from sales tax allocations distributed in December 2024 when compared to those distributed in December 2023. Cities received $720.3 million in sales tax revenue this month, while it was $245.5 million for transit systems, $113.3 million for special purpose districts and $71.6 million for counties. Revenue increased 13.1 percent for special purpose districts, 8.1 percent for counties, 6.8 percent for transit systems and 5.7 percent for cities.
For the year, sales tax revenue is up 2.2 percent statewide in 2024 from 2023. Sales tax revenue for cities is up 1.9 percent in 2024 over totals received in 2023, while it’s up 1.9 percent for transit systems, 5.2 percent for special purpose districts and 2 percent for counties.
