Punchers Dominate All-District Lists

Mrs. Duarte’s second graders learned how to draw a big and little polar bear with winter tree silhouettes.

The Mason High School football team dominated the District 14-2A Division I all-district teams once more.

Senior Sutten Silerio, kept up a Puncher tradition by being named the district’s Most Valuable Player. That award went to Ryne Todd for three consecutive seasons.

Silerio had 171 carries for 2,322 yards and 38 touchdowns without a fumble and 11 receptions for 189 yards and four touchdowns. In all, he had 2,511 offensive yards and 42 touchdowns during the 2024 season.

Head coach Michael McLeod explained what made Silerio so great.

“He’s silently driven,” he said. “When the bullets start flying and the tough part of the game comes, that’s when he’s getting primed and ready. He’s able to do so much with God-given talent. It’s easy to take for granted. He does it effortlessly. He trusts his coaches, and he’s just a good player.”

Senior quarterback Carlton Schmidt took Offensive MVP honors, while junior linebacker Clancy Osbourn was named the Defensive MVP and senior receiver Jayden Clawson is the Utility Player of the Year.

Schmidt had 110 carries for 1,029 yards and 20 touchdowns and completed 63 of 120 passes for 1,441 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Schmidt and Silerio bring out the best in one another and have done so for a long time, the coach said.

have done so for a long time, the coach said.

“They train together,” he said. “They’re part of families with Mason ties. They have that bond. They compete on the track together. They’re brothers from another mother.”

As an offense, Mason generated 5,654 yards of total offense with 88 touchdowns.

No play described what “Big Ox” Osbourn meant to the Punchers better than what he did to a Thorndale play October 11.

“He hit that running back hard,” McLeod said. “It was the hardest hit I’ve heard. He weighs 210 pounds and was coming about five or six yards away. He forced a fumble. He had a breakout game. He did a fantastic job.”

Seniors Rylan Todd and John Preston Parrish are the Offensive Linemen of the Year and senior Jame Steglich is the Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Tharp is the Newcomer of the Year and sophomore Brandon Gonzales is the Kicker of the Year.

First team all-district offensive honors went to senior linemen Cannon Rabon, Chantz Reed and Walker Ince, receivers Mitchell Underwood and Hunter Bradley, who are both seniors, Trevor Loeffler, who is a junior, and Kingston Garza, who is a sophomore, and junior fullback Fisher Bradley.

McLeod and his coaches are the Staff of the Year. The results of the all-district lists illustrate how McLeod and his coaches used the many talented Punchers throughout the season, especially in ensuring they all received quality minutes that will help the program in the coming years.

“It’s a no-lose situation for those guys,” he said. “There’s no fault in it for them. There’s nothing at stake for them. It’s high level reps and experience that absolutely carries over into their next sports and into the future. There’s emotional toll, there’s physical toll. I know the fight our boys have in them. I think it’s vitally important and beneficial for our program now and in the future.”
